In celebration of International Pronoun Day, which takes place annually on 16 October, VCCP are proud to have contributed to a new Pronouns in Adland guide alongside volunteer-run LGBTQIA+ advocacy group Outvertising and the All In LGBTQIA+ Working Group.

Created to help the media and advertising industry create safer and more welcoming environments for their people, the ‘Pronouns in Adland’ initiative is part of the broader All In Action Plan, led by the Advertising Association, ISBA, and the Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA), aiming to build safer and more inclusive workplaces throughout the media and advertising industry.

Dentsu, the7stars, and McCann Worldgroup also contributed to the guide, sharing our experiences with introducing pronouns at work to support others in doing the same.

For many, using and respecting pronouns is a simple yet powerful way to self-identify, show allyship, and create a culture of inclusivity. Julian Douglas, Global CEO and Chair of UKAEG

The guide serves as a crucial resource, providing answers to frequently asked questions about pronouns and addressing common misunderstandings. It’s designed to foster understanding and support, helping industry professionals navigate the importance of pronouns in the workplace.

Speaking to the initiative, our Global CEO and Chair of UKAEG, Julian Douglas, shared, “For many, using and respecting pronouns is a simple yet powerful way to self-identify, show allyship, and create a culture of inclusivity. I am proud to support this initiative and encourage everyone who wishes to share their pronouns to do so with pride.”

The chapters include guidance on the proper use of pronouns, commonly used terminology, navigating multiple pronoun use, distinguishing between gender and sexual orientation, handling mistakes, practical tips for pronoun usage, real-life case studies, and a summary of the latest All In census data on LGBT+ individuals.

A special thank you to Campaign UK for highlighting the ‘Pronouns in Adland’ guide and to Beau Jackson for writing this insightful piece.
