This is why <\/span><b>Transport for London<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has a zero tolerance approach to all forms of abuse on its network and keeping customers safe is its top priority.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As part of its commitment, <\/span><b>TfL<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, with the help of agency of record <\/span><b>VCCP London<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Wavemaker UK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> has launched the integrated \u2018<\/span><b>TfL Stands against Hate &#8211; Bystander Intervention\u2019<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Bystanders can play an important role in preventing or discouraging incidents before they can and help victims feel less isolated.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">To ensure that this campaign is helpful to customers, <\/span><b>TfL<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><b>VCCP<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> and <\/span><b>Wavemaker UK<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> worked together closely with a team of experts to identify what actions people could take. They also worked with customer focus groups as the campaign developed to make sure it was informed by the people who will be using the transport network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Through research, TfL identified a genuine knowledge gap around indirect interventions like engaging with the victim of abuse rather than confronting the perpetrator and how this was more likely to diffuse the situation. This follows behavioural research revealing that 63% of customers said they would feel more confident in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">intervening in an incident<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> if they had more information on how to help.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">London-based Illustrator, Raj Dhunna, developed the campaign creative, taking into consideration the customer research. The campaign features distinctive illustrations that bring to life the different ways that travellers can safely intervene if they witness a hate crime or abuse. To achieve the executions Raj created visuals of a mouth, eyes and teardrops to visually convey the action people take. The three campaign executions are each based on specific behavioural asks, and within each the language has been crafted to be clear but also accessible to customers so that they feel empowered to safely intervene in an incident if they are a witness:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Distract<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (mouth): <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ignore the offender and a<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sk the targeted person simple, calm questions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Document and report <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(eyes): Note specific details of what you\u2019ve seen and report the incident<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Support<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> (teardrops): After the event, offer help to the targeted person<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>        \r\n                \r\n  \t\t\t      <\/div>\r\n      \r\n      <div class=\"col-md-6\">\r\n    \t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alongside the iconic TfL branding, the creative also utilises the same colour palette and similar illustrative style to the existing \u2018Stands against Hate\u2019 campaign to ensure consistency and connection between the two.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Miranda Leedham, Head of Customer Marketing &amp; Behaviour Change at TfL said<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe operate a zero tolerance approach to any abuse and hatred across the network and are working hard to tackle this behaviour. Through developing this campaign we understand that the information needs to be clear, simple and action-oriented. It is not enough to simply ask people to intervene. Specific and memorable behavioural prompts are the difference between knowing that you should intervene, and feeling that you can. That said, we do not expect customers to police the network but rather we want to give them enough information so they feel safe enough to support fellow customers if they witness a crime.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>Caroline Rawlings, Group Creative Director at VCCP London added:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe hear all too often about incidents that have happened on public transport and we want to help, but we just don\u2019t know how. Well, TfL identified this as an issue and I\u2019m so delighted that they continue to work hard to tackle it. With support from VCCP CX and Wavemaker, this campaign encouraged the public to take an active stance against hate crimes across the TfL network. This is part of a larger campaign which will tackle all incidents on the transport network, including staff abuse and drunken aggression.\\u00a0\\u003c\\\/span\\u003e\\u003c\\\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eThe ambition of the campaign was to create real societal change which could only be achieved through collective action amongst customers and staff. \\u2018TfL stands against Hate\\u2019 aspired to provoke a proactive response amongst commuters. TfL delivered a rallying call to all passengers to raise their hands in support of tackling hate crimes across the TfL network.\\u00a0\\u003c\\\/span\\u003e\\u003c\\\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eTfL is committed to improving the ways in which it tackles hate crimes that occur on London\\u2019s transport network and to better understand the lived experiences of BAME, LGBTQ+ and disabled commuters. In light of this, TfL took a stand and called all Londoners to support the #TogetherAgainstHate movement. This encouraged Londoners to pledge to a commitment to end hate crimes across the TfL network. #TogetherAgainstHate sought out to debunk hate crimes, encourage the reporting of incidents and most importantly, encourage solidarity.\\u00a0\\u003c\\\/span\\u003e\\u003c\\\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eThe creative was made up of distinctive illustrated hands, which were displayed across the TfL network and social media platforms through GIFs and Instagram effects alongside digital OOH executions - all created in-house by VCCP CX. These illustrations featured the iconic TfL branding in their design and served as symbols of inclusion and togetherness. Commuters and TfL staff will be able to see these beautiful reminders of TfL\\u2019s efforts to stop hate crime.\\u003c\\\/span\\u003e\\u003c\\\/p\\u003e\",\"text-right\":\"\\u003cp\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eTfL are creating a blog and social films, featuring real TfL staff sharing their own personal stories of hate crimes across London\\u2019s transport network. A number of influential podcast hosts such as Dane Baptiste Questions Everything; Too Peas in a Podcast; HipHop Saved My Life; A Gay and A Non Gay; and Intelligence Squared; will share their own experiences. Running in parallel, an influencer partnership programme will see personal stories of hate crime posted on Instagram.\\u00a0\\u003c\\\/span\\u003e\\u003c\\\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eIn addition, there was a collaboration with media partner PinkNews to host three bespoke editorial content pieces on www.pinknews.co.uk and promote them on its social channels. The content focused on individuals who had been subjected to hate crime on the TfL network, sharing their personal experiences.
