style=\"font-weight: 400\">pre<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">conceived <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">opinion<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Whether <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">it <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">involves <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">binary <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">arguments like Brexit<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\/<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">more <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">answer <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">no<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you shouldn&#8217;t style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cognitions <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">which <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">form <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">them<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Therefore<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">any <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">attempt <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">change <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">someone&#8217;s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mind <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">head<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">&#8211;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">manner <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">likely <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fail<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">More <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">recently<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hahnemann <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">demonstrated <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">how <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">deep <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">seated <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">instinctive <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">so <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">our <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">beliefs <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">decisions <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">remain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">For <\/span>both <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">these <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">reasons<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">arguments <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">generally <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">don&#8217;t <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">work<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Indeed<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">I&#8217;d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">go <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">so <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">far <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">say <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">once <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you&#8217;ve <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">started <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">an <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">argument <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">someone<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you&#8217;ve <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">already <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">begun <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to <\/span>lose <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">them<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And even <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">if you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">do <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">technically <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">make <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">point they <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">won&#8217;t <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">exactly <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">thank you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">But <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">many <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">brands <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">still <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">act <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">if <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rational <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">argument <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">way <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">forward<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">They <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">lead <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">marginal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">points of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">difference<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">they <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">load <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">their <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">communication <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">less <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">than <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">fascinating <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">product information<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the <\/span>process<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">distinctiveness <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">too <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">often <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sacrificed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">favour <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">differentiation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">And <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">this <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">trade <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">off <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">prove <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">very <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">costly<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Because <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">if <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sacrifice <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">distinctiveness <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">sacrifice <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">memorability<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">if <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">no <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">one <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">remembers <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">possibly arcane<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">) <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">point <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">difference<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">what <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">logic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">trying <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">communicate <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">it <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">first place<\/span>?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Mental <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">availability <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">has <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">become<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">by <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">some <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">distance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">modern <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">communication <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">imperative<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">You <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">win <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">foothold <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">memorability <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">mind of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">prospect <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">before <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">you <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">service <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">rationale<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400\">just <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">one <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">must <\/span><span We had to find our own coping mechanisms back in those days. The problem, however, is that the chart habit seems to have stuck. And it's not as if we were an industry that was averse to slideware in the first place.\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eDon't get me wrong. I know we need presentations, and presentations often need some slides. They provide a framework for what we have to say, as well as a record of our objectives, plans and recommendations. Depending on the subject matter, charts can often be essential, particularly for information-heavy topics such as media and market performance. But, as the information load gets lighter, so should the charts. If we're simply framing an argument or point of view do we need charts at all?\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eOne of the reasons I ask this question is from my experience of enforced slidelessness. Unless you're one of those people for whom technology always works perfectly (and I'm yet to meet one), the chances are that you will have experienced more than a few tech meltdowns. This inevitably means that the PowerPoint deck you were about to romp through remains stuck stubbornly on a distant, truculent server.\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eIn these situations, whilst the IT technician wrestles with cables and remote controls, and we smile at each other awkwardly, I've taken to asking \\u0022should we have a go at starting without the slides?\\u0022. Sometimes the reaction to my question is one of quiet horror, as if an ancient protocol has been offended. On other occasions we give it a go freestyle and, lo and behold, ten minutes in and everyone has forgotten the wrestling technician. We're swimming without slides. There is even mild disappointment when the recalcitrant HDMI link is restored and we can boot up the slideware.\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eThe meeting immediately becomes more formal and more regimented. There are also more interruptions. Perhaps because there is now something to interrupt. Or perhaps because of boredom. What has been gained in terms of structure has been lost in terms of fluency.\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eSo we should aim for both. This means dramatically cutting down on the number of slides, and also on the number of words on the slides. If you ever find yourself reading out the fourth bullet point under the third subhead of the forty-third slide then I'm afraid you've got a bad case of chart\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eitis. You're reading, not presenting.\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eWe're all guilty of this every so often due to expedience. It's the easiest way of downloading everything we want to say. Chopping words out, cutting down on charts, takes time and effort. Thus Mark Twain's famous proviso, \\u0022if I had more time I would have written a shorter letter'.\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eBut lack of time is only part of the explanation. The other is lack of clarity. We end up festooned in charts and bullet points because we're not quite clear what we mean. And for this, there is only one solution. Before you go anywhere near PowerPoint, write what you mean down in normal sentences in normal English. Only then can you tell if it's clear and if it's meaningful. It's much easier to mangle a chart than it is to mangle prose.\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eThe cure for chartitis, therefore, can be summed up in four simple steps. Step 1, start with a script (despite the urge to chartify). Step 2, ruthlessly edit your charts to highlight only the essential points you're making. Step 3, where possible, don't repeat on the chart what you say in your narrative - illustrate, visualise or dramatise your point instead.\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eThe 4th step is perhaps the most daunting, which is to individualise what you present. Don't assume that your script needs slides at all. Slides can so quickly emphasise similarity rather than difference. Why not handwrite your points on boards? Or drag a Nobo chart along and draw your thoughts up as you go through them? - it worked for Simon Sinek.\u00a0 Devote some time to ensuring that any visual props are an \\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eextension \\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eof you, rather than the other way round.\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eWe kid ourselves that presentations are viewed rationally. So there is no inherent mirth therein.\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eOn the other hand, there is a lot of mirth in creating a comic character who resolutely wears zany shirts and wacky ties, thinking he's a hoot, and in the process becomes a parody of the maddening office japester.\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eThis is what\u00a0\\u003cem\\u003eThe Fast Show\\u003c\/em\\u003e did with the character Colin Hunt. Colin brings a narrative logic to what would otherwise be gratuitous zaniness.\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eWe understand the absurdity that is being lampooned, the conventions that are being subverted. Chaplin's rule is observed. Mirth ensues.\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eSo wherever there's humour, you'll find a strand of contorted logic - from the simplest pun to the most developed comic characters (be it Fawlty, Fleabag or Partridge).\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003ePuns rely on very concise logical inversions, and therefore are often best read rather than heard.\u00a0\\u003ca href=\\u0022https:\/\/twitter.com\/DadJokeMan?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor\\u0022\\u003e@DadJokeMan\\u003c\/a\\u003e\u00a0on Twitter comes up with at least one a day. He likes making puns about eyes. The cornea the better.\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eAdvertising works with similar time lengths and attention spans to joke-telling, so the \\u003cstrong\\u003eparallels\\u003c\/strong\\u003e are plentiful. Just like a joke, people need to \\u0022get\\u0022 your ad quickly and rewardingly.\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eThis is how to win attention and achieve memorability. But unlike a joke, we don't have dozens of opportunities to hone our delivery and comprehension. We have one shot.\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eWhich is why, during creative development, it pays to be hyper-vigilant around issues of legibility, audibility and comprehension.\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eFor me, these are the three main guarantors of logic. And they can sometimes be underestimated. Not deliberately or wilfully or carelessly. It's just an occupational hazard that, when we're very close to a project, a lack of objectivity can creep up on us.\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eWe can forget that we've been through the idea a hundred times, and can thus start to make assumptions about comprehension and narrative flow. Other priorities such as performance, styling, casting or technique may distract us from the Chaplin fundamental.\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eAs we pore over the detail, we can overlook the end-user, who will be seeing our ad for the very first time, with no assumptions, no foreknowledge and, moreover, no obligation to pay any attention\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eIn the real world, our narrative discipline must be rock solid, otherwise the whole production is flawed. Nobody likes an ad they can't understand.\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eThis was brought home to me the other day when we tested the same ad with two voiceovers, one for the UK and one for Australia. In Australia, the ad flew through research with gold stars and garlands all round.\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eIn the UK, the picture was very different. The same ad struggled to command attention or generate appeal.\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eWe felt that the disparity in response was unlikely to be due to huge national differences. And we were right. The problem was comprehension.\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eMore specifically, the problem was a single word. A single word that people were not hearing clearly enough, and which was therefore confusing the narrative.\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eThe poor results of an entire test film were down to the slightly muddy delivery of a familiar, commonly used word. We know this because the re-recorded version of the test film sailed through research just as successfully as its Australian counterpart.\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eHyper-vigilance is not a natural or particularly enjoyable state to be in (as my feral rescue dog Annie can attest). But fear not, it is by no means constantly necessary (unless you\u2019re Annie).\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003eThe sense check of narrative logic and comprehension needs to be applied\u00a0only\u00a0a few times (in creative development, pre-prod and post-prod). There is no point in having great conversion activity at the bottom of the funnel if there is no brand activity filling the fat end from above. I have written before that one of the most fraught decisions a marketer now makes is how to optimise resources between the competing demands of high and low-end channels.\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eThe trouble is that continued polarisation only makes this decision fraughter. Particularly at the top end of the funnel where supply is finite (as opposed to the bottom end where supply is more elastic). With everyone facing the same decision-making dilemma, the outcome of this media bifurcation is both inevitable and painful; rampant TV inflation.\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eThere can be very few budget holders who aren't currently wrestling with the problem of whether to rob Paul or pay Peter as they try to make their Christmas budgets balance. In a sobering Campaign article (August 5), Mark Given justifiably describes broadcast linear TV inflation as 'eye-watering'. And consolation is hard to come by when we look beyond broadcast. In the same article, even non-linear TV CPM is forecast to rise by 19% this year according to WARC. Hardly un-eye-watering.\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eSo what can we do? Well, rather like a central bank, the answer depends largely on the reserves built up. Is the brand equity cupboard full or empty? How indelibly branded is your communication? How much ongoing return are we seeing from past investments and the insulating dividend yield that distinctive brand assets generate for the future?\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eThese questions are always crucial, but they become even more so during a media inflation spike. Put simply, when attention is at its most expensive, mental availability is at its most valuable and the brand dividend is your budget's best defence.\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eStrong mental availability, for instance, allows a brand to take some liberties and shortcuts when planning broadcast media. An instantly recognisable brand property means time length can be sacrificed to grow frequency thanks to the familiarity of the device. Too many brands pay for attention and then try to brand it. Posters are a great quasi-broadcast alternative which have so far proved largely inflation-proof. But you need tremendous brevity and compression to make them work. Radio is another obvious contender although, again, the best results will require a strong audio property that competes for attention in its own right (see The Era of the Ear, Campaign, Oct \u201821).\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eThere are plenty of other inflation-mitigating moves. Great value can still be found in sponsorship, particularly for brands in search of raw awareness. Experiential marketing can drive talkability if handled well, but its impact can be unpredictable. Another option, which can often be overlooked, is to revive promotions, programmes and initiatives which already have good levels of residual awareness, but which have fallen into the trap of being launched and left. This is a trap to avoid in an inflationary climate. Why start at square 1 when you can start at square 3?\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eIn the end, however, mitigation is never as effective as preparation. Those brands which have been storing up their Brand Capital in the more affordable years will be the brands best placed to dominate the fight for attention as inflation spirals in the months to come.\\u003c\/span\\u003e\\u003c\/p\\u003e\\n\\u003cp style=\\u0022text-align: left\\u0022\\u003e\\u003cspan style=\\u0022font-weight: 400\\u0022\\u003eThis is not to say that late starters can't catch up. And necessity, of course, is the mother of invention. Perhaps the severity of this inflation shock will encourage more of the industry to focus more on the creation of distinctive brand assets for their Clients.
