Which are just gimmicks? Trying to keep up with the pace of tech progress in healthcare can be a daunting task.                  <\/blockquote>\r\n                \r\n  \t\t\t      <\/div>\r\n      \r\n      <div class=\"col-md-6\">\r\n    \t\t<p>To make things a little easier, VCCP Health visited the 8th annual WIRED Health event at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.crick.ac.uk\/about-us\">The Francis Crick Institute<\/a>\u00a0for a day filled with inspirational people at the cutting edge of healthcare. Below is just a handful of things we learned.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. A selfie could save your life<br \/><\/strong>FacePrint is an app that helps diagnose Parkinson\u2019s disease and possibly other neurological conditions through facial recognition. Founded by the extraordinary\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/developer.affectiva.com\/hero\/erin-smith\/\">Erin Smith<\/a>\u00a0while she was still at high school, this diagnostic tool will be launched primarily through social media.\u00a0 We\u2019ll be watching its progress with interest.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. There is hope for the looming threat of antibiotic resistance\u00a0<br \/><\/strong>It comes in the form of this incredible woman who spends her days exploring caves to find a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ncheeptham.sites.tru.ca\/\">solution<\/a>. Why caves? Her research is focused on whether new drugs with different mode of actions and with new scaffolds can be found in rare or less studied microorganisms living in extreme habitats (i.e. caves).\u00a0<\/p>  \t\t<\/div>\r\n  \t\t\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    \r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/section><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"lazyblock-image-full-width-Z2tpS8Q wp-block-lazyblock-image-full-width\"><section class=\"fullwidth fullwidth--img\">\n    <img data-src=\"https:\/\/www.vccp.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/IMG_0026-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload img-fluid\">\n\n<\/section><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"lazyblock-two-column-text-quote-image-1X1xhO wp-block-lazyblock-two-column-text-quote-image\"><section class=\"fullwidth fullwidth--overflow \" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\r\n  <div class=\"container container--spaced-lg\">\r\n    \r\n    <div class=\"row\">\r\n      \r\n      <div class=\"col-md-6\">\r\n                \r\n                <blockquote class=\"blockquote blockquote--md-right\">\r\n          3. Mary Lou Jepson&#8217;s latest venture at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.openwater.cc\/\">Openwater<\/a>\u00a0is set to revolutionise access to medical imaging by creating a portable MRI that will be a fraction of the current cost.\u00a0\u00a0<br \/><br \/><strong>4. WHO guidelines can have surprising applications\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>In 2010, Scotland had the highest rates of violence in Europe. We learned from Scottish forensic psychologist and chief executive of Community Justice Scotland\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.managementtoday.co.uk\/karyn-mccluskey-changed-city\/women-in-business\/article\/1464970\">Karyn McCluskey<\/a>\u00a0how homicides in Glasgow have been reduced by 60%<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/future\/story\/20180723-why-we-should-treat-violence-like-an-epidemic\">\u00a0through treating the violence as an epidemic<\/a>\u00a0as per WHO guidelines:\u00a0 Interrupt transmission; change behaviour; change norms\u00a0<br \/><br \/><strong>5. Machine learning is revolutionising every part of healthcare, from R&amp;D to self-monitoring to diagnosis and treatment.<\/strong><br \/>We heard from many innovators who had utilised the power of machine learning in a broad range of ways. This included Noor Shaker who founded GTN, a company that uses quantum physics and machine learning to search potential drug molecules. We also enjoyed a live demo of a diagnostic tool created by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/deepmind.com\/applied\/deepmind-health\/working-partners\/health-research-tomorrow\/moorfields-eye-hospital-nhs-foundation-trust\/\">Moorfield Eye Hospital and DeepMind<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 currently in beta testing, its success could mean patients in the most remote parts of the world can access life-changing ophthalmic care.<br \/><br \/><strong>6. UK lifespans may be increasing \u2013 but our healthspans are not<br \/><\/strong>Despite all the innovation in health, it was shocking to discover from Professor Sally Davies that, while life expectancy in the UK has improved, \u2018health expectancy\u2019 (how long you live a healthy life) has gone backwards, especially for the poorer sections of society. She suggests putting it next to GDP \u2013 what gets measured gets sorted! href=\"https:\/\/assets.publishing.service.gov.uk\/government\/uploads\/system\/uploads\/attachment_data\/file\/767549\/Annual_report_of_the_Chief_Medical_Officer_2018_-_health_2040_-_better_health_within_reach.pdf\">here<\/a>.<\/p>  \t\t<\/div>\r\n  \t\t\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    \r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/section><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"lazyblock-text-full-width-Z1lSYdu wp-block-lazyblock-text-full-width\"><section class=\"fullwidth text-center\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n  <div class=\"container\">\n    \n    \n    <h4>Though the overwhelming feeling from the day was positive, with improvements in diagnostics and treatments on the horizon, this was a sobering reminder to stay focused on the experience of the patient, to be sure we are harnessing the power of technology in a way that makes a meaningful difference.<\/h4>\n
