Next Thursday, the likes of Buzzfeed, Global Street Art and Glug are here to talk all things \u2018Culture Hacking\u2019. What\u2019s that you say? It\u2019s those gold-dust moments during which brands or movements have populated culture and gone viral in a stroke of brilliance. In anticipation of next week\u2019s talk, this blog takes a look back at some of the best culture hacking moments of the decade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALS Ice Bucket Challenge\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This explosively viral social media challenge and marketing campaign raised awareness in 2014 for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The premise was simple \u2013 film yourself being doused by a bucket of ice-water and call out anyone you want to film their own challenge video within 24 hours. The challenge gained enormous organic traction, but how did it succeed where so many others have failed before? Well, it was own-able, simple and unique, the videos proved to be entertaining material, and to top it off \u2013 it was all in the name of a good cause. Perhaps the biggest hook was the fact that people were personally called out by friends and family to do the challenge \u2013 leveraging the pulling power of both social proof and good old fashioned peer pressure.<\/p>\n<p>Airline Safety Videos<\/p>  \t\t<\/div>\r\n  \t\t\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    \r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/section><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"lazyblock-image-full-width-Fq68f wp-block-lazyblock-image-full-width\"><section class=\"fullwidth fullwidth--img\">\n    <img data-src=\"https:\/\/www.vccp.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/Screen-Shot-20180817-at-214402.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload img-fluid\">\n\n<\/section><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"lazyblock-two-column-text-quote-image-DawaG wp-block-lazyblock-two-column-text-quote-image\"><section class=\"fullwidth fullwidth--overflow \" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\r\n  <div class=\"container container--spaced-lg\">\r\n    \r\n    <div class=\"row\">\r\n      \r\n      <div class=\"col-md-6\">\r\n                \r\n                \r\n  \t\t\t  \t\t\t<div class=\"img-inline img-offset-left-md\">\r\n          <picture class=\"embed-responsive-item\">\r\n            <source data-srcset=\"https:\/\/www.vccp.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/cur-3.jpg 768w\">\r\n                        <img data-src=\"https:\/\/www.vccp.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/cur-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"lazyload img-fluid img-1-1\">\r\n          <\/picture>\r\n        <\/div>\r\n              <\/div>\r\n      \r\n      <div class=\"col-md-6\">\r\n    \t\t<p>Watching an airline safety video isn\u2019t many peoples idea of a good time \u2013 traditionally they\u2019ve been formal, rigid, and interminably boring affairs.\u00a0 Increasingly however, airlines have been attempting to push the envelope around the tone and style of their safety briefings, with Air New Zealand being the real pioneer in this space. Since 2009 they&#8217;ve released 15 high-concept videos, racking up over 100 million views online between them and featuring everyone from Betty White to the cast of The Hobbit. Their efforts have bought a new dimension to the &#8216;mandatory viewing&#8217; status of airline safety videos.<br \/><strong><br \/>The Dress\u00a0<br \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Remember this one? The simple question that divided the Internet in 2015 \u2013 blue and black, or white and gold? A seemingly innocent photo of a dress posted on social media sparked a viral movement. People were adamant that the colours they saw were right, setting off a sharing frenzy (it was blue and black \u2013 obviously). Dunkin\u2019 Donuts, Lego and Tide all jumped on the back of this narrative, parodying and playing on the viral trend.<\/p>  \t\t<\/div>\r\n  \t\t\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    \r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/section><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"lazyblock-two-column-text-quote-image-Z2mFWte wp-block-lazyblock-two-column-text-quote-image\"><section class=\"fullwidth fullwidth--overflow \" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\r\n  <div class=\"container container--spaced-lg\">\r\n    \r\n    <div class=\"row\">\r\n      \r\n      <div class=\"col-md-6\">\r\n                \r\n                <blockquote class=\"blockquote blockquote--md-right\">\r\n          Of course, this type of reactive advertising can be a double-edged sword.                  <\/blockquote>\r\n                \r\n  \t\t\t      <\/div>\r\n      \r\n      <div class=\"col-md-6\">\r\n    \t\t<p>When it\u2019s clever and original it can go down a storm (See KFC\u2019s response to a fried chicken shortage) but when brands get it wrong it can be cringe-worthy in the extreme (See \u2018Brands saying Bae\u2018).<\/p>\n<p><strong>So, what can we learn?<\/strong><br \/>The ALS ice bucket challenge and \u2018Dressgate\u2019 would suggest that people are more likely to share something that started organically or in the case of ALS, in the name of a good cause. However, the creativity of Air New Zealand also demonstrates that there are opportunities to turn even the most stuffy and dull moments into viral sensations. The airline safety video also seems an apt comparison to how many people may look at advertising \u2013 much of it looks the same and it\u2019s generally just an unwanted byproduct of the thing you\u2019re really trying to consume.<\/p>  \t\t<\/div>\r\n  \t\t\r\n    <\/div>\r\n    \r\n  <\/div>\r\n<\/section><\/div>\n\n<div class=\"lazyblock-text-full-width-bold-ZWAau3 wp-block-lazyblock-text-full-width-bold\"><section class=\"fullwidth text-center\" data-aos=\"fade-up\">\n  <div class=\"container\">\n\n    <h4>It\u2019s not enough to just inform people about safety rules, or in our case, a product or brand \u2013 you need to earn the right to interrupt them.
