The idea for a free city newspaper originated in Sweden and was developed by Associated Newspapers for the UK market. Metro started life in London in March 1999. It quickly attracted a new and unique audience we call 'Urbanites'. Metro was designed to fit perfectly into their busy lifestyles. Being both cash rich and time poor this audience were much sought after by advertisers and often hard to reach with traditional forms of media. Many of them had not previously read a daily newspaper before Metro came along.

Over the past 6 years Metro has grown to become a strong and recognisable brand loved by Urbanites all over the country. It is now the UK's 4th largest national newspaper with 8 franchises and 15 UK cities across the country.
